The Buckeye is a private hunting and cattle ranch. We created this website to show what ranching is all about. However, we are not into social media. The videos on this site are on YouTube, but they are unlisted and cannot be viewed without knowing this web address. We do not use social media because we realized we do not want to share the Buckeye with the world. We want to share the Buckeye with YOU.
This site is created to be fun, goofy, and informative. If you are here and like what you see then share it with others. However, keep in mind who you share it with. No complainers, whiners, or generally disgruntled individuals are allowed. Life is too short to spend it with someone who orders a steak, eats half of it, sends it back to the kitchen as undercooked. Can you imagine spending time with someone like that? We can and we definitely do not want to take them hunting.
We intend to add content to show what life on a ranch is really like. That will include the fun aspects(Ranch Life), the not so fun(Ranch Work), and maybe some bonus content too. See below for all new videos and photos before they are archived in the menu tabs
December 2024
This Winter video has nothing to do with the fishing, hunting, or any semblance of ranching. Travel north into the mountains of Vermont to a sleepy Christmas village and inn.

August 2024
Finally, we got some video of the 2 year olds. See how much they grew from their first rack last year. Also, enjoy a small sampling of fawns. I know there is great disappointment across the land because we didn’t do a full feature film this year. There is always next year.

June 2024
This site is quickly turning from ranching into fishing. So be it! We promise to get back to mammals ASAP so never fear. Be sure and watch for a video of our 2 year old bucks. They are finishing up their racks right now(July). In the meantime, watch the family fish in beautiful Arkansas. Stick around for some bloopers, mockery, and weezey laughs.

Sad Update– The boys fished hard but the regional tournament at Lake Limestone proved a difficult one. No fish caught by Brock and Kyle. For the most part, most of the anglers were skunked on a day the Lake was swelled and dirtied by flood waters.
Next season begins September 2024. Stay tuned.

Round 5 of 5: Conroe (March 23, 2024)
The boys need to weigh in 1 more fish to guarantee a spot in the regional tournament. Let’s see how they do in the regular season finale on Lake Conroe.
Enjoy some bonus content from Brock and Kyle on the boat.

Round 4 of 5: Toledo Bend. (February 2, 2024)
Not everything is about hooves and horns. Follow Brock and Kyle compete for CS Anglers in the Texas High School Bass Association. Currently they are competing to make the Regional tournament at Lake Limestone in April. Let’s see if they can once again make the post season.
This is a fun video showing a day on the water. The Saunders clan at Lake Conroe and the Norton clan at Lake Limestone. Watch the teammates, captains, and family battle it out for a Cross Lake Showdown. Smack talk included.

When will the tooth fairy visit? This is a much watch video for all hunters.
Note: I may have been overly critical in this video. Aging deer by their teeth is one tool in a big toolbox. Most projects require many tools to get the job done. Use it accordingly.

Antler Removal 2023
I know it has been a long wait, but this video is finally available. One of the yearling bucks died last week and I had no choice but to get in the pen and remove all their antlers. Here are the 10 bucks and some of the removal process. Keep in mind, these guys are only 18 months old.

Fawn Fest 2023
You’ve waited a whole year for season 2! The wait is over.
Ranch Work 5/20/23
I hope the edge of your seat is comfortable because that is where you are going to be for the next 15-20 minutes. Even small issues can lead to disaster. Let’s see if I blow it and waste thousands of dollars down a well.
Ranch Work- Moving Day – Sit back and relax. This is about 20 minutes of lectures, monologues, stress, and moving doe around the Buckeye.

It’s Happening! Deer are walking into bullets all over the ranch. Click images below to enlarge.
Let’s see what happens when hungry deer meet scary Jack O Lanterns.

Monsters in them woods.
We have a real show stopper walking the Buckeye. His running buddy isn’t too bad either.

Got a new camera to zoom in on the bucks. Check out how much the yearling bucks from last fall grew this summer.

Feature Film: Fawnfest 2022
How adorable is a new born fawn? Take a look here and see how we catch and process these little guys. The video will remind viewers to never pick up wild fawns. Finding a fawn in the wild is exciting and with no doe around many people pick up the fawn thinking it is abandoned. That fawn is NOT orphaned. Doe leave their fawns and return many times a day to nurse. Doe can also sense or smell their fawns. This is key because many people accidentally chase up a fawn and it runs off. They assume the doe will not find it and they go and collect the fawn themselves. Just remember.
- It is illegal to raise a wild fawn. They are owned by the state of Texas. The exception is breeder deer like the ones shown in this video.
- Raising a fawn is a massive undertaking. They must be fed 6 times a day. There are a list of trials and tribulations involved.
- Touching a fawn will make the mother abandon it is NOT true, but touching a fawn is something that should NEVER be done.

Draining of the teet
We come back from vacation to find a new calf, but a problem soon arises. I should have sold this cow years ago, but nothing to do about it now. Time for some Ranch Work.
***UPDATE*** Really bummed to report the calf died after nearly 2 weeks. It went into a zombielike state for over a week. It was alive, but not very responsive or vocal. I kept it as full of milk and water as best I could; however, it was not to be. I didn’t have the heart to show or video the struggling calf. I sold the cow. She weighed a remarkable 1600lbs(Thats a lot of cow to feed each year) and I sold her for nearly a $1.00/pound, which was the silver lining in this ordeal.
Failing never feels good, but failure from neglect is even worse. I can feel good knowing I did my best for the calf. There was no neglect. If I had to do it all over again I would have immediately gone to town and bought colostrum(first milk) from the feed store and given it to the calf. This calf never got colostrum cause it was impossible. I assumed the calf was a few days old when I found it, but maybe even then the colostrum would have made the difference. I waited too long and without colostrum it is usually going to end like this.
Sunflowers-Volume 1- The Plant
This will be a learning experience. Let’s spend some time learning how to grow sunflowers to attract birds. This series will take us through the fall hunting season.
Sunflowers-volume 2- The Snag
With no rain in sight and record high temperatures, I have abandoned planting the two acres I plowed in Volume 1. It makes no sense to put seeds in the ground that MAY come up but eventually die with no rain. Fortunately, I had already planted 2-3 acres just before the rain came(A big letdown of only .4″) and I have the ability to irrigate. Here is a quick look at where things stand.

This is how I go about removing pigs from our properties. I left out most of the awful parts because PETA would not like it.
