The Buckeye Ranch was established in 1996, and is owned by Claudean Saunders. Her son Richard, manages the land(and this site). We are located in Winchester, TX. Formerly, the ranch was a cattle, peanut, and corn operation until 1997 when we built a game fence around most of the property. Later that year, deer from South Texas were added and we are just now ending our 25th hunting season. The cattle operation now consists of commercial cattle but also Registered and Ultrablack Brangus. We no longer farm peanuts or corn, but instead turned the plowed fields into hay fields and pasture. Over the years, one property turned to three as we own another piece of land in Fayette County and Burleson County.
In 2019, we built some small deer pens to accommodate pen deer. This was something we always avoided and never seriously considered. However, after more than twenty years, we wanted to make a change and inject some new blood into our current deer herd. The plan is to release fawns from the pens into the big pasture and see what kind of genetic increase we see over the next 5-10 years.
In much the same way, we are starting to build out a new registered Brangus herd from the ground up. It will be many years before we get to where we want to go, but get there we shall. The new deer and Brangus have given the ranch a real sense of a promising and exciting future.
